Gore Mountain Ski Center in North Creek
There are no large ski areas directly off the Northway. The APA discourage any large scale Rockies type development. There are a few smaller family places like in Lake George, Corinth, and Warrensburg. Gore Mountain is the largest and is off of NY Route 8. Use the Warrensburg Exit 23, follow US 9, to NY 28 West, to North Creek. For Southbound travelers, you can access it from Exit 26 or Exit 25.
Whiteface Mountain Ski Center, in Town of Wilmington north of Lake Placid on NY 86, is the best bet for high performance skiing as well as Olympic nostalgia and fame. It has the the largest vertical drop, 3200', in the Northeastern United States. It is located in along the gorgeous Ausable River, just north of Lake Placid. Like Gore, they are both run indirectly by the state. The best way to get there is Exit 30 to Lake Placid for northbound travelers and Exit 34, to Ausable Forks & Wilmington, for southbound travelers.

The state has you get off at Exit 30 for Titus, I recommend going up to Plattsburgh, Exit 37W, then west to Malone on NY 190 to CR 24 in Brainardsville. It's much flatter and has more services.
