Interstate 87: Adirondack Northway
This Website is Now Over 19 Years Old. |
Glens Falls is an old paper and wood mill city located on the Upper Falls of the Hudson River, just past the I-87 bridges over the Hudson River. Queensbury is the town surrounding Glens Falls. Though technically not in the Adirondack Park, it is the gateway city to the park and mountains and is the largest city in the North Country next to Plattsburgh. Though it has seen better days and has experienced many gut wrenching old plant closings, it is still a well maintained place, unlike some notorious downstate horror stories. The downtown district has the usual old urban area makeover look and is reasonably pleasant, since those older buildings were well built with style. The shopping area off of Exit 19 is the last major mall and chain store area before the Adirondacks. The shopping area boasts the perfect place to live, shop, work & play. You can explore their farmer's market. Exit 18 is the best place to get basics like gas and fast food at reasonable prices. So if you need some gas-food-lodging-supplies before the Adirondack Mountains or Canada, stop here. In downtown Glens Falls, by the rotary above, is the Glens Falls Civic Center. The Civic Center is a major venue for sports, music and other events in this part of the country.
Coles Woods in Crandall Park in Glens FallsThis is a great place to ski right off the Northway in the city of Glens Falls no less! Though it lacks High Peaks wilderness appeal, it has miles of groomed and lit ski trails. Also good for mountain biking in season.
Cooper's Cave Bridge is where US 9 crosses the Hudson River between City of Glens Falls and Village of South Glens Falls. There is an actual cave under the bridge open to the public. This cave was an inspiration to the original American novelist James Fennimore Cooper in the 1820's as he penned his classic novel, "Last of the Mohicans". This would have been where Hawkeye and Uncas hid under the falls to escape the pursuing Indians, as depicted in the great movie of the same name. Of course, settlement and industrialization changed the character of this gorge, like a dam, but later pollution control efforts as well as civic pride resurrected this spot for you to enjoy for free.
