Town of Lewis

meadows and mountains

Lewis is a quiet little town, great for relaxing if you hate all the high powered hype of the major tourist stops. The Town of Lewis was incorporated in 1805 and was named for the third Governor of New York State, Morgan Lewis. It is still a working town, where a lot of locals work in lumber, agriculture and mining. But it is still a pretty place and a good value for budget conscious people. It is home to the Poko Moonshine Mountains and climbing cliffs

Atlas Missile Silo Lewis's Military History Instructional Placard.

Lewis once had an active Atlas ICBM missile and silo in operation from 1962 until 1965. The missile was housed in a 52' square wide and 176' deep hardened concrete underground complex right off of US 9. It was protected against a direct hit by a nuclear bomb. The missile had a 3.75 megaton hydrogen, or thermonuclear, bomb warhead. On the more peaceful side of life, Lewis is still the home of the Meadowmount School of Music. They have a world class summer camp for aspiring young classical musicians.
