Essex is a very charming, historic little town on Lake Champlain, but still in the Adirondack Park. It is chock full of Federal and Greek Revival architecture and has no fast food joints or suburban sprawl zones. It is very pretty ville but a bit steep for budget minded types like the webmaster. The whole hamlet is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, so it is a Mecca for lovers of the past. Only the lovers of cinder block, windowless flat roofed box buildings will be disappointed here(sarcasm). There is also ferry service to Charlotte, Vermont year round.

You can reach Essex easily from Exit 32, same as Lewis exit, and head northeast on Essex County Road 12. Or if you are already on the lake, use NY 22 which is fast and scenic, just be careful in season.
